ABSTRACT
Piles of rice husks have no selling value and become one of the wastes that cause
the surrounding environment to be unhealthy, so an appropriate technique for
processing rice husk waste is needed. One technique for processing rice husk waste
is to process it into activated charcoal. Activated charcoal is widely used as an
adsorbent in wastewater treatment to remove various types of heavy metals through
the adsorption process. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of
variations in particle size of rice husk activated charcoal on Cu metal adsorption
and to determine the effectiveness of Cu metal adsorption by varying the
concentration of Cu metal using rice husk activated charcoal as an adsorbent. This
research begins with the preparation of raw materials, charcoal activation, then
activated using 1 N HCL solution for 24 hours. Then the adsorption process was
carried out by contacting the adsorbent with Cu metal, with adsorbent sizes of 80,
100 and 100 mesh, adsorbate concentrations of 15, 20 and 25 ppm, stirring speed
of 250 rpm and the amount of activated charcoal as much as 5 grams. The
adsorption solution was then analyzed using AAS. The adsorbents produced with
particle size variations of 80, 100, and 120 mesh each contain 5%; 6%; and 9%
water, 42%, 44% and 47% ash and iodine adsorption capacity of 450.48 mg/gr,
494.9 mg/gr, and 539.32 mg/gr. The highest absorption effectiveness is found in the
80 mesh size of the adsorbent with an adsorbate concentration of 20 ppm, which is
99.84% with an adsorption value of 0.031 ppm.
