An Analysis Of English Students’ Speaking Anxiety At Universitas Riau During The Online Learning
This research aims to find out the level of students’ speaking anxiety and the factors that causes students’ speaking anxiety during online learning. The subject of this study was students of the English Study Program, Faculty of Teachers Training and Education, Universitas Riau (2020 batch). This study used the simple random sampling technique which means the sample taken 25% of the population with 28 respondents. The data used mixed method which the questionnaire and interview as an instrument. The result of the questionnaire shows the students’ speaking anxiety during online learning is overall in the middle anxious level. It was identified that there were 6 students (21%) are in the anxious level, 21 students (75%) are in the middle anxious level, and 1 student (4%) in the relaxed level. The result of the interview indicated that there are factors that causes students’ speaking anxiety during the online learning that included speaking in the online class, the difficulty to understanding the material, low-self-esteem, student’s belief about language learning, and fear of being laughed at by peers.
