ABSTRACT
Kasturi mango (Mangifera casturi Kosterm.) is a native and endemic plant from South Kalimantan which has been classified as an endangered plant in situ or Extinct in the Wild according to the IUCN Red List Categories and the World Conservation Monitoring Center (WCMC). Endophytic fungi are fungi that live in plant tissues without causing negative effects on plants. Usually, secondary metabolites produced by plants will be in line with those produced by endophytic fungi in their tissues. M. casturi contains bioactive compounds such as alkaloids, flavonoids, tannins, terpenoids and phenolics which are proven to be used as antioxidants, anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, antifungal, antidiabetic, antileukimic and immunostimulant. One of the potential secondary metabolites of endophytic fungi is as an antimicrobial agent that can inhibit the growth of pathogenic microbes in humans, this can be a solution to overcome the current high rate of antibiotic resistance. This study aims to isolate, test antimicrobial activity and characterize endophytic fungi from the leaves of Kasturi Mango (M. casturi Kosterm.). Twenty three isolates of endophytic fungi were successfully isolated. All isolates were able to inhibit the growth of the test bacteria Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus, but had no ability against Candida albicans. Highest antimicrobial activity against E. coli is produced by Aspergillus sp. KMC 4 with the diameter of the inhibition zone 17 mm, while the highest antimicrobial activity against S. aureus was produced by Aspergillus sp. KMC 11 and Mycelia sterilia KMC 10 with an inhibition zone diameter of 23 mm. This endophytic fungus consists of the genera Aspergillus, Syncephalastrum, Cladosporium, Penicillium and the Mycelia sterilia group.
