An Analysis Of Cultural Content On English Textbooks For Grade X Of Vocational High School
This research aims to find out what cultural contents are represented in English textbooks for grade 10th of Vocational High School. The descriptive qualitative method was used in this research to analyze cultural content in three textbooks: "Forward an English," "Bahasa Inggris untuk SMA/SMK Kelas X Edisi 2017," and "English for SMK." The data was collected through document analysis and using the theory of cultural categories by Cortazzi & Jin (1999) and cultural aspects by Yuen (2011) as guidelines. The findings revealed that source culture (SC) dominates all three textbooks, with descriptive text, stories, and illustrations frequently appearing. For cultural aspects, the portion was significantly different. Products were shown with the highest percentage in each textbook. In order to teach English as a second language, teachers need to be aware and selective about the material since textbooks have an essential role. More variety is also needed to help teachers introduce balanced cultural knowledge to students, especially in cultural aspects.
