Background: The impact of the COVID-19 pandemic has caused many countries
to implement online education. Online learning is different from face-to-face, so
paying attention to aspects of equipment, facilities, and technology is necessary.
Research results on the two types of education differ in various educational
institutions. The Faculty of Medicine, University of Riau, carries out Histology
lessons online with video demonstrations and slide shows using the ZOOM platform
during a pandemic.
Objective: The study aimed to compare the results of the Histology practicum exam
between face-to-face and online learning methods for students of the Faculty of
Medicine, University of Riau, in 2019 and 2020.
Method: This research is an analytic study cross-sectional approach. The research
sample is secondary data on the Histology practicum exam scores in face-to-face
and online learning. The sample size is 90 each. The sampling technique used
simple random sampling. The research data were statistically analyzed using the
Independent T-test and Mann-Whitney test.
Result: Data on histology practicum test scores for Nervous and Locomotor
Systems and Gastrointestinal Systems, Metabolism and Endocrine Systems were
normally distributed. The mean score for the practicum exam for the Nervous and
Locomotor Systems block in 2019 face-to-face method was 36.17, and in 2020 the
online method was 50.00 (p-value = 0.000). The average Gastrointestinal,
Metabolic, and Endocrine Systems block for the 2019 face-to-face method was
37.08, and the 2020 online method was 62.71 (p-value = 0.000). Data on the
histology practicum test scores for the Circulation and Respiration Block were not
normally distributed. The Mann-Whitney test was carried out with a p-value of
0.000
Conclusion: The statistical analysis results showed differences in the histology
practicum values of the Histology blocks of the Nervous and Locomotor Systems,
Circulatory and Respiratory Systems, Gastrointestinal Systems, Metabolism and
Endocrine Systems in 2019 and 2020.
