In general, peatlands in Riau Province consist of mainland (island) and archipelago lands. The island peatlands in Riau Province include Rangsang Island in Meranti Islands Regency and Bengkalis Island in Bengkalis Regency. Rangsang Island and Bengkalis Island are two of the KHG in Riau Province that are located on the coast and facing the Strait of Malacca. Island and archipelago peat generally have different moisture and characteristics. Island peat decreases in moisture more easily than island peat due to the influence of sea tides. Therefore, it is necessary to conduct research on the characteristics and measure peat soil moisture on island peatlands in Riau Province. This research consisted of two stages: field testing and laboratory testing. Field testing consisted of two methods: sampling peat drills to determine the depth of peat and measuring the soil moisture profile, and sampling to determine peat soil moisture in the field and taking test samples. Furthermore, peat soil samples will be tested in the laboratory. The results of the analysis of the vertical distribution of moisture in West Muntai and Tanjung Bakau villages have the lowest soil moisture values at the surface, namely 39,34% and 35,96% and the highest moisture values occur when approaching the GWL. The water table in both villages is greater than 40 cm. The peat soil samples have high water content and are categorized as Slightly Absorbent and Moderately Absorbent. The maturity of the peat soil in Tanjung Bakau Village, KHG Rangsang Island is classified as hemic and saprik, while that in West Muntai Village, KHG Bengkalis Island is saprik and fibric. Saprik peat was found to be blackish brown in color and very little wood and coarse plant fibers were found. Hemic peat is reddish brown in color and contains wood and plant fibers such as roots, while fibric peat is light reddish brown in color and is filled with many plant roots and wood
