Persepsi Masyarakat Terhadap Konflik Gajah-Manusia dan Upaya Konservasi di Desa Pinggir Kecamatan Pinggir Kabupaten Bengkalis
The Sumatran elephant (Elephas maximus sumatranus) is a protected species categorized as endangered. The incursion of Sumatran elephants into plantation areas and residential areas often leads to conflicts between humans and these elephants. This research was conducted in the Pinggir Subdistrict of Bengkalis Regency, specifically in Pinggir Village, with the aim of understanding the community's of the conservation of Sumatran elephants perception. The purposive sampling method was employed, targeting residents of Pinggir Village directly affected by the elephant-human conflict, using Likert scale analysis. The research findings, based on six questions regarding community perceptions of elephant conservation, indicate that the majority of respondents agree that Sumatran elephants post problems as they damage crops when passing through community plantations. However, the community does not view interactions between elephants and humans as inherently negative. Most respondents also agree that elephants are rare animals that should be preserved, and they are willing to participate in conservation efforts. One form of conservation adopted by some residents of Pinggir Village involves modifying the elephants' pathways around plantations by planting vegetation that elephants dislike, a practice supported by the Rimba Satwa Foundation through the provision of various plant seedlings. The community's expectation for the conservation of Sumatran elephants is that they are allowed to remain in their natural habitat. However, some community members believe that elephants should be relocated to a sanctuary and provided with proper nutrition. In conclusion, the community's perception of elephant conservation in Pinggir Village is relatively high, with an average agreement rate of 92.8% across the six questions. This indicates that the community holds positive views on elephant conservation, as reflected in their opinions, knowledge, and attitudes.
