Biology Fair (PRB) is a competition organized by the Riau University Biology Education Student Association to determine the competency and high-level thinking abilities of middle school/senior high school students, especially in the field of biology, which has been held regularly every year since 2002. One of the branches of the PRB competition which has electability The highest is the Written Competency Test (UKT) at high school level. Based on PRB high school level UKT results data in 2023, the range of lowest to highest scores obtained by high school students was 14 – 78, this is a fairly wide range of scores. Based on the author's observations of high school level UKT scores at PRB in the last 3 years, the highest score obtained by students never reached ≥ 80 but was a maximum of 78 (2020 and 2023 Biology Fair). The PRB questions presented were created by the question team and have been consulted with expert lecturers, however these questions have not gone through a question item analysis process so the quality of the questions is not yet known. Therefore, this research aims to determine the quality of the questions and the profile of students' cognitive abilities in solving high school level UKT questions so that we can find out what the quality of the questions and the level of cognitive abilities that students are able to achieve at each level of the cognitive domain.
This research is a quantitative descriptive study carried out at the Biology Education Study Program, FKIP, Riau University from July to November 2023. The population in this study was all 289 UKT participants from various high schools/equivalents in Riau Province and the Riau Islands who took UKT. in PRB in 2023. The sampling technique used in this research was total sampling. The parameters in this research include: 1) Analysis of question items at each UKT stage, namely stages 1, 2 and 3; 2) Profile of high school students' abilities in solving UKT questions based on the cognitive levels of Anderson and Krathwohl's revised Bloom taxonomy at each stage; and 3) Questionnaire analysis of students' cognitive ability profiles in solving UKT questions. The types of data used in this research are quantitative data and qualitative data. The data collection technique in this research is documentation and questionnaires.
The research results obtained were first, analysis of question items with Anates 4.09 software for objective questions at stages 1 and 2 of each of the 50 questions found good questions totaling 11 questions (22%) and 15 (30%). The results of the analysis of question items using Anates 4.05 software for essay questions at stage 3 out of 10 questions found good questions totaling only 3 questions (30%). Second, a profile of students' cognitive abilities was obtained, namely at the C2 cognitive level, they had a high average score of 73.0%; students' abilities at cognitive levels C3 and C4 have moderate average scores, namely 48.8% and 48.9; The cognitive abilities of students at cognitive levels C5 and C6 have low average scores, namely 21.7% and 23.8%. So, the cognitive abilities of students from all cognitive levels at each stage have a low total average score of 43.2%. Third, analysis of the profile questionnaire of high school students' abilities in completing Written Competency Test (UKT) questions at PRB in 2023 showed an average score of 4.5, which means very good. The highest score is 4.56 from the indicator of the role of the supervising teacher, followed by 4.49 from the indicator of student learning motivation. Then, the school policy indicator is 4.39 and finally the lowest indicator of student learning readiness before participating in the competition is 4.38.
Based on the research results, it was concluded that the quality of the questions presented by the questions team committee at PRB 2023 was not good, that is, of the 110 questions presented, based on the results of the analysis of the questions, 29 questions were good or accepted, 40 questions were quite good or needed to be improved, and 41 questions were not good or were rejected. The cognitive ability profile of high school students in solving UKT questions in PRB in 2023, namely at cognitive level C2, has a high average score of 73.0%; students' abilities at cognitive levels C3 and C4 have moderate average scores, namely 48.8% and 48.9; The cognitive abilities of students at cognitive levels C5 and C6 have low average scores, namely 21.7% and 23.8%. So, the cognitive ability profile of students from all cognitive levels at each stage has a low total mean score of 43.2%.
