Identifikasi Cacat Kayu Meranti (Shorea Spp.) Pada Proses Pengeringan Alami
Meranti wood is a popular type of wood and is in great demand by craftsmen and the wider community. One effort to improve the quality of wood is by drying the wood properly. Natural drying of wood has several obstacles, such as the drying process which takes a long time and the tendency for drying defects to occur in the wood. This research aims to determine the types of meranti wood defects in the natural drying process and determine the defect classes of meranti wood in the natural drying process. Before drying, the water content of the boards is measured using dimensions (radial and tangential directions). Arranged horizontally in an outdoor drying room. During the drying process, the temperature, humidity, water content, dimensions and physical defects are measured. Analysis of data on wood drying defects expressed as a percentage of the area of the surface of the wood with defects from all test cross sections of each test sample and determining the class of drying properties and wood defect values based on ASTM-D 1666-64. The research results showed that the types of meranti wood defects found in the natural wood drying process were splitting, cracking and warping. Meranti wood in the natural drying process is included in wood defect class II, with the class category being good..
