Alang-alang (Imperata cylindrica L.) is a type of grass with sharp leaves, which is often a weed on agricultural land. Weed control is generally carried out using synthetic herbicides. The use of synthetic herbicides has negative effects such as: polluting the environment, killing natural enemies, decreasing soil organic matter levels and increasing weed resistance.
Bioherbicides are an effective and environmentally friendly weed control method because they come from nature so they have a small chance of causing environmental pollution and degradation. Babadotan (Ageratum conyzoides L.) is a type of broad-leaved weed that is often found on agricultural land. Babadotan contains secondary metabolite compounds that can be used as bioherbicides. This research aims to determine the effectiveness of babadotan extract as a pre-emergence and post-emergence bioherbicide in controlling alang-alang weeds.
Research was carried out at the Natural Materials and Minerals Laboratory, Faculty of Engineering and the Plant Ecophysiology Laboratory, Faculty of Agriculture, as well as the Riau University Experimental Garden. The research was carried out in stages, the first stage was a pre-growth test and the second stage was a post-growth test. The design used was a Completely Randomized Design (CRD) with 4 treatments of babadotan extract concentration, namely 0%, 25%, 50%, 75% and repeated 5 times. The parameters observed were germination percentage, germination rate, plumule and radicle length in the pre-growth test. Percentage of weed death, phytotoxicity, regrowth time, chlorophyll content, photosynthesis rate, in post-emergence tests. Analysis of total levels of secondary metabolite compounds using gravimetric, colorimetric and permanganometric methods. Observational data were analyzed using analysis of variance (ANOVA) and then continued with a further BNT test at 5% level.
The results of the study showed that babadotan extract (Ageratum conyzoides L.) starting at a concentration of 25% was able to inhibit the germination of alang-alang weed seeds in the pre-growth study, and in the post-emergence study the best treatment was a concentration of 75% babadotan extract based on the percentage of weed death and phytotoxicity of the alang-alang weed. .\ Therefore, babadotan extract can be used as a contact pre-emergence and post-emergence bioherbicide to control the alang-alang weed (Imperata cylindrica L.).
