The Correlation Between Reading Comprehension And Translation Ability Of The Sixth Semester Students Of English Study Program Of Fkip Universitas Riau
One of the most crucial language abilities that students needs is reading comprehension. Understanding the meaning of the text in order to determine the lexical meaning of sentences is referred to as reading comprehension. Reading involves a translation process as well. Textual content and translating text from one language to another are the subjects of translation activities. As a result, students
gain a number of advantages from the translation process when it comes to increasing their reading comprehension. This study aimed to find out whether there is a significant correlation between reading comprehension and translation ability of the sixth semester students of the English Study Program of FKIP Universitas Riau. This research employed a quantitative methodology. Correlational
quantitative research methodology was employed in this study. The goal was to show the relationship between two variables. In this study, two variables were the students’ reading comprehension and their translation ability. The population of this study was 3 classes of the sixth semester students, while the sample was 37 students from class B. Data were collected from two parts of the test, namely multiple choice and essay test. The hypothesis results displayed an alternative hypothesis (Ha), the Asymp.sig. (2-tailed) is (0.01 < 0.05). Therefore, there is a
significant correlation between students' reading comprehension and translation
ability. It is hoped that learning materials such as the use of novels, news, articles,
and other written media can improve students’ reading comprehension and their
translation ability.
