Investigating English Department Student’s Ability In Comprehending English Reading Exposition Text
This research investigates the level of reading comprehension ability of third year English students at the University of Riau in comprehending English exposition texts, which is important for academic success but often a challenge for non-native speakers. A quantitative descriptive survey was conducted on 90 third-year students using a 50-question test covering five aspects of comprehension: main ideas, references, vocabulary, conclusions, and details. Students showed average overall ability (score 65.46%) in understanding exposition text. While the aspects found were 87% superior in finding references, only 40.11% were sufficient to identify the main idea. These findings reveal students' strengths in understanding explicit textual elements such as references but difficulties in understanding higher-order skills such as understanding the author's main premise. Improving understanding of main ideas and drawing conclusions from exposition texts should be prioritized to develop the comprehensive reading skills essential for English majors.
