Background: Maternal mortality remains a critical global health issue, with approximately 287,000 deaths reported worldwide in 2020. High maternal mortality rates are influenced by several factors, including severe postpartum bleeding, infections, and notably, preeclampsia. Preeclampsia affects 2-10% of pregnancies globally and is associated with increased cardiovascular risk in later life. Chronic hypertension, a cardiovascular complication, refers to high blood pressure that persists for more than 12 weeks following delivery. Method: In this study, we utilized a retrospective cohort design to analyze medical records of mothers diagnosed with preeclampsia at Arifin Achmad Regional General Hospital and administered questionnaires to gather data on chronic hypertension. Result: Out of 1,861 pregnant woman, 356 (19,1%) mothers were diagnosed with preeclampsia. Among the 52 who could be contacted, 35 (67,3%) were found to have chronic postpartum hypertension, of which 33 (94,2%) had a history of preeclampsia with severe feature. Statistical analysis using the chi-square test with p-value of 0.031, indicating a significant relationship, with a relative risk (RR) of 2.69. Conclusion: This suggests that mothers with a history of preeclampsia have a higher likelihood of developing chronic hypertension.
