The Role of Public Relations in Enhancing the Positive Image of Higher Education Institutions in Kampar Regency This study aims to determine the role of public relations in enhancing the positive image of higher education institutions in Kampar Regency. The research is a qualitative descriptive study. The subjects include the Rector and the Head of the Public Relations Department. Data collection was carried out through interviews, observations, and documentation. The collected data were then analyzed using a reduction technique.
The results show that the role of public relations in improving the positive image of higher education institutions in Kampar Regency is implemented according to established procedures. However, in practice, certain aspects have not been executed in a structured manner. The roles of public relations in these institutions include the following: 1) Public relations as a communicator, responsible for delivering clear and accurate information. 2) Public relations as a relationship builder, tasked with fostering good relationships with various stakeholders. 3.) Public relations as an image shaper, accountable for creating and maintaining the institution's positive image.
The public relations media used tend to be more informative and lack strong persuasive elements, as observed in the institution's brochures. The target audience of public relations activities includes internal publics (lecturers, staff, and students) and external publics (business/industry and the general public). To address existing challenges, public relations teams in higher education institutions in Kampar Regency need to create structured work agendas for each member, enabling them to perform their duties more effectively.
A 2023 survey revealed that only 45% of the public in Kampar Regency are aware of the flagship programs of local higher education institutions. This data highlights the importance of public relations in raising public awareness and building the institution's image. The challenges faced by public relations in disseminating information and shaping the institution's image include: 1) Public relations functions are not fully optimized, as members often hold dual roles, such as teaching subjects. 2) Limited time availability, which sometimes hinders public relations members from effectively serving external publics. 3) Internal dissatisfaction with the performance of the public relations team. Efforts to overcome these challenges include developing agendas for each public relations member to ensure they can effectively fulfill their responsibilities.
