Efektivitas Penambahan Astaxanthin pada Pakan untuk Meningkatkan Kecerahan Warna Ikan Jalai (channa maruliodes)
Snakehead fish (Channa maruliodes), an endemic species from the Kampar River has become increasingly popular as an ornamental fish due to its beautiful body coloration. However, the main challenge in its cultivation is the time required to achieve optimal coloration that take 1 to 1.5 years period. The long cultivation period has led breeders to rely more on capturing adult fish with vibrant coloration rather than raising the juvenile of snakehead fish. To accelerate the appearance of color in juvenile snakehead fish, feed containing astaxanthin is given. Astaxanthin, a compound from the carotenoid pigment group, is commonly used as a feed supplement to enhance the color brightness in several ornamental fish species. However, the effectiveness of astaxanthin supplementation in snakehead fish has not been clearly established. This study aims to analyze the effect of addition of astaxanthin to fish feed pellets at different doses to enhance the color brightness of snakehead fish.
A completely randomized design (CRD) with 4 treatments and 5 replications was applied. Various dosages of Astaxanthin (AST) applied were 0% (AST0), 1% (AST1), 3% (AST3), and 5% (AST5). The snakehead fish used in this study were juveniles with average 30.6 g BW and 16–17 cm TL. The fishes were reared in aquaria containing 30 L water, one fish per aquarium. The astaxanthin enriched feed was provided, 5% of body weight, three times a day (08:00, 13:00, and 17:00 WIB) for 50 days. Parameters measured were the increment of carotenoid content in fish skin, color brightness, absolute weight growth, specific growth rate, absolute length growth, feed efficiency, and the quality of rearing media, including temperature, pH, dissolved oxygen, and ammonia levels. Data were then analyzed by ANOVA using a SPSS version 24. If there was a significant difference, a Duncan's multiple range test was applied at a 95% confidence level.
Results indicate that the addition of astaxanthin in the feed for snakehead fish has a significant effect on various important parameters in fish cultivation, including the increment of carotenoid content, enhanced body color brightness, and also increment in weight and length growth. The best result was obtained in AST5 (the addition of 5% astaxanthin) as it shown the highest total carotenoid content (136.68 ppm) and brightness body color (up to 5.17 increased). Furthermore, the fish in this treatment also shown the best growth pattern, namely absolute weight growth of 23.00 g, absolute length growth of 3.10 cm, and specific growth rate of 1.4% per day, indicating the growth of fish was optimal. In this treatment, the feed efficiency achieved was also excellent, at 23.00%.
Based on the results above, it can be concluded that the addition of astaxanthin to the feed for snakehead fish has been proven effective in increasing carotenoid content, color brightness, and fish growth, with the optimal dose in the AST5 treatment resulting in a significant improvement in color quality and growth rate. This suggests that astaxanthin supplementation could be a solution to accelerate the coloring process and enhance the quality of snakehead fish cultivation.
