A Case Study of Code- Switching Used by Teachers and Students of Senior High School in The Classroom in Rokan Hulu Riau Indonesia
As a foreign language, English becomes a difficult subject to be learnt by the students. This fact leads to the used of code- switching both by teachers and students in the classroom. Therefore, code- switching phenomenon in the teaching and learning process in EFL classroom cannot be avoided. It is because most of English teachers believe that code pswitching has several functions in teaching and learning process. This is a case study of SMAN 1 Rambah which aims to find out the type of code- switching that used in the classroom both by English teachers and students, the reasons of English teachers and students of using code -switching in the classroom, and to find out the teaching and learning process of using code-switching in EFL classroom. in order to get a concrete data, the researcher used triangulation method. Classroom observation, interview, and video recordings were believed could get concrete data related to code -switching. The result of data analysis showed that there were three types of code- switching occurred in the classroom which were inter-sentential code-switching, intra-sentential code-switching, and tag-switching. Also, there were several reasons of teachers and students using code-switching in the classroom such as giving explanation, translating, repeating, checking understanding, managing classroom, clarifying, response, and group membership.
