ABSTRACT
Fatty alcohol (C16H34O) is an aliphatic alcohol which is a derivative of
natural fat or natural oil. Fatty alcohol is part of fatty acids and fatty aldehydes.
Fatty alcohol products are formed from the raw materials RBDPO (Refined
Bleaching Deodorization Palm Oil), methanol and hydrogen. Fatty alcohol
products occur in two reaction processes, namely transesterification and
hydrogenation. The transesterification reaction process occurs in reactive
distillation by reacting RBDPO and methanol with a conversion of 95%. The
temperature and pressure of the transesterification reaction are 60ᵒC and 1 atm.
The methyl ester output and glycerol by-product from reactive distillation flow into
the decanter to produce methyl ester with a purity of 99%. Then the methyl ester is
reacted with hydrogen in a fixed bed multitube reactor with a temperature of 250ᵒC
and a pressure of 40 atm. The reaction that occurs in the fixed bed multitube reactor
is a hydrogenation reaction with a conversion of 91% using a CuCr catalyst. The
output of fatty alcohol and methanol from the fixed bed multitube reactor is purified
using a flash drum and then subjected to distillation. This aims to ensure that the
purity of the fatty alcohol is 99%. The factory being established will operate 330
days per year and work continuously 24 hours with a capacity of 20,000 tons/year.
The factory will be established in Dumai, Riau. The company form applied is a
Limited Liability Company (PT). The employee work system is based on the division
of working hours consisting of shift and non-shift employees. The main equipment
designed for the factory is Methyl Ester Hydrogenation Reactor (R-101) which
functions to react methyl ester with hydrogen. Economic analysis of the factory
shows that the factory is feasible to establish. With a Break Even Point (BEP) value
of 52%, Payback Period (PBP) of 2 years 10 months, Rate of Investment (ROI) of
35.5%, and Internal Rate of Return (IRR) of 22.75%.
