Peran Natural Resources Defense Council (Nrdc) Dalam Mengatasi Gelombang Panas Di India (2022-2023)
India is the third largest emitter of greenhouse gases (GHG) in the world after China and the United States. The increase in GHG has made India experience climate problems, one of which is a heat wave. In overcoming the heat wave, the Indian government is working with the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC), which is one of the non-governmental organizations that focuses on the environment..
In analyzing NRDC's role in helping India overcome the heat wave, this study uses John McCormick's theory of the role of environmental NGOs. McCormick said that environmental NGOs were formed due to a lack of government awareness regarding environmental issues. Environmental NGOs use nine strategies, namely collaborating with government officials, conducting fundraising, organizing public protests, promoting coverage related to environmental issues, engaging in litigation and monitoring regulations, conducting information exchange, conducting research, managing property, and involving local communities in protecting the environment. This research uses data obtained from literature sources in the form of books, journal articles, reports, and publications and other sources which are then analyzed using the document analysis method.
Research results show that the role of NRDC in helping India overcome the heatwave issue in 2022 and 2023 aligns with the nine strategies mentioned by McCormick. In this case, NRDC played a role in the creation of the Heat Action Plan (HAP) in collaboration with the Government of India. NRDC also supports the India Cooling Action Plan (ICAP) by collaborating with the local Indian organization The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI) in the creation of cool roof. In addition, NRDC is also involved in developing the Hariyali Green Villages program in collaboration with another local Indian organization, the Self-Employed Women's Association (SEWA).
