ABSTRACT
Linear Alkylbenzene (LAB) is an isomer of long-chain alkylbenzene. Its general chemical formula is represented as C6H5CxH2x+1, where x ranges from 10 to 16. LAB has been used as a key ingredient in detergents to produce environmentally friendly and biodegradable products. The demand for LAB is expected to grow due to increased public awareness of cleaning and hygiene products. The rise in detergent sales and other cleaning products will drive market growth. However, in Indonesia, there is only one LAB plant, so LAB needs to be imported to meet industrial demands. The establishment of this LAB plant is aimed at fulfilling domestic LAB needs, thereby reducing import values and contributing to the country's revenue. The LAB plant, utilizing the UOP/CEPSA process from benzene and olefin, is planned to be built in the Kutawaru area, Cilacap Tengah District, Cilacap Regency, Central Java Province, in 2028, with a capacity of 60.000 tons per year.
LAB production is carried out using the UOP/CEPSA process or the Detal process, assisted by environmentally friendly silicotungstic acid catalysts, producing LAB as the main product and HAB as a byproduct. The reaction occurs inside a CSTR reactor at an operating temperature of 120°C and pressure of 2,96 atm, with benzene and olefin conversions of 19,25% and 95,13%, respectively. LAB is purified using a distillation column to obtain a product with 97,7% purity. The utility requirements for the LAB plant include steam supply units, water supply units, and electricity supply units. The plant is equipped with safety instruments and process control instruments to ensure smooth production processes.
The LAB plant has a fixed capital investment of IDR 867,018,250,297, a working capital investment of IDR 153,003,220,64. resulting in a total capital investment of IDR 1,020,021,470,938. and a total production cost of IDR 4,071,458,038,762.08 The generated product is projected to generate annual revenue of IDR 4,554,963,046,764 Profitability analysis shows a net present value (NPV) of IDR 1.509,177,319,912.53 an internal rate of return (IRR) of 25.45%, a break-even point (BEP) at 49,3% of production capacity, and a payback period (PBP) of 3.07 years. Based on these results, the design of the LAB plant from benzene and olefin using the UOP/CEPSA process is deemed feasible to establish and represents a profitable investment.
