ABSTRACT
The increase in palm oil production in Indonesia produces abundant solid waste,
one of which is empty oil palm bunches (EFB) which has the potential to be used
as raw material for activated carbon. This study aims to analyze the best
concentration and activation time on the quality of EFB activated carbon, the
ability of EFB activated carbon to adsorb Cu²⁺ metal ions, and to analyze the
characteristics of the adsorbent using Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM),
Brunauer Emmett Teller (BET), Fourier Transform Infra Red (FTIR), and X-Ray
Diffraction (XRD) tests. EFB was carbonized at a temperature of 600°C for 1 hour,
then a chemical activation process was carried out using NaOH with variations in
concentrations of 0.5 M and 1 M and activation times of 6, 12, 18, and 24 hours.
The results of EFB activated carbon were then subjected to proximate analysis,
activated carbon samples that had fixed carbon values according to the SNI 06-
3730-1995 standard were then applied to the adsorption process using artificial
Cu²⁺ waste solution. The best results were obtained on activated carbon activated
using 1 M NaOH for 24 hours with a removal efficiency of 98.43% and an
adsorption capacity of 4.92 mg/g. SEM analysis showed that the surface of
activated carbon had large pores that were closed again after adsorption,
indicating the absorption of Cu²⁺ ions. BET test showed a surface area of 218.123
m²/g with an average pore size of 1.22 nm. FTIR test identified functional groups
such as –OH, C–H, C=C, C–O, and C≡C, with a shift in wave numbers after
adsorption indicating the involvement of these groups in the interaction with Cu²⁺
metal. Based on XRD analysis, the degree of crystallinity decreased from 9.72%
before activation to 16.57% after activation, indicating a more crystalline structure.
