Studi Emisi CO2 Akibat Kebakaran Hutan di Provinsi Riau(Studi Kasus di Kabupaten Siak)
Forest fire is one of the major problems in Indonesia. Forest fires that occurred in
Indonesia have destroyed not only the vegetation over the burned areas but also huge amounts of
organic matters in peats under the forested areas. Forest fires have become a serious problems
in Riau Province every year especially in the dry seasons. One of the region in Riau Province that
potential of forest fire occurrence is Siak Regency which finally contribute to increased emission of CO2
because of the result of biomass burning or peat land burning. Most of the resulted emissions from
forest fires are in the form of CO2. Forest fires in Indonesia are mostly related to human
activities. Forest fires normally start from the edges of forest areas where human activities are
more intense. This research was aimed to analyze the CO2 emissions due to forest fires that
occurred in Siak Regency, Riau Province Indonesia, in 2010 and to analyze the probability of
forest fire occurrence in Siak Regency using the available data. To estimates the CO2 emissions
due to forest fires there are several data needed mainly: the location and the extent of burned
areas, the available fuel load per unit area, burning efficiency (fraction of fuel that actually
burned during fires), and emission factor (amount of CO2 emitted per unit of fuel burned).
Logistic regression was used to analyze the relation between fire occurrence and the mentioned
factors. Fire and CO2 emissions in the area of plantation forests are greater than in the area of
natural forests. The amount of CO2 emissions due to forest fires in 2010 varied between 107.260
Ton CO2 yr-1 for natural forests and 151.600 Ton CO2 yr-1 for plantation forests. The amount of
CO2 emissions due to forest fires in the peat land was 2.176 Ton CO2 yr-1. This value is mainly
depending on the extent of the burned area in the year of 2010. Results of the logistic regression
show the forest fires are more likely to occur in degraded forests (which have lower NDVI
values). It is influenced by the number of fires and the incidence rate of fuel load.
