Coastal areas with all natural uniqueness, beauty and appeal, is an area which is ideal for the development of settlement activities. This shows that the population growth rate is high enough to have an impact on the existing ecosystem changes. Environmental conditions of the coastal town Selat Panjang not well ordered. In addition to high rates of poverty, one requirements for adequate housing have not been met.
The purpose of this study was to identify the characteristics of the coastal residential area in Selat Panjang, analyze the physical suitability as a residential dwelling, as supporting social, cultural and economic activities as well as determine the management strategies of coastal residential areas in Selat Panjang. The method used was a survey to retrieve data collected using Linkert scale.
The results showed that the characteristics of the residential coastal areas in Selatpanjang is mostly dominated by the settlements. Settlement condition is largely non-permanent and semi-permanent settlements, without a coastal protection structure. Level according to the physical condition of a residential dwelling with legality residential component, the structure of the building, the living space per occupant, availability of water, availability of bathroom facilities, waste services and residential electrical grid indicates the condition of "not appropriate" as living quarters. Furthermore, the level of compliance as a means of supporting the social, cultural and economic activities of coastal communities Selatpanjang with components of the assessment of health facilities, education, worship, government and public services, open space, trade and services addressing the results "were not appropriate". Therefore, it is very necessary to improve the residential facilities. Residential coastal area management strategies of Selatpanjang can be done with land use demolition, occupancy increased as a function of residence, improving the quality of residential neighborhoods, as well as the improvement of facilities and infrastructure supporting the settlement.
