An Analysis Of Cultural And Language Content In English Textbooks For The Third Grade Students Of Junior High School
This study aims to find out what cultures are and how cultures are applied in English textbooks for third-grade junior high school students. The data for this research is an English textbook entitled English Think Globally Act Locally revised 2018, English in Focus for Grade IX SMP and Bright an English Course for Junior High School revised edition. The samples in this study were words, pictures, illustrations, readings and various other activities in each textbook. Data were collected using a checklist format based on the framework of Cortazzi and Jin (1999), Yuen (2011) and Adaskou, Britten & Fahsi (1990). There are three aspects analyzed, namely categories of culture, elements of culture and language content. The results of the study reveal that Source Culture appears the most in these three English textbooks as a cultural category, and Product appears most often in these three English textbooks. the language content speech act is the one that appears the most compared to grammar. As a result of the research, it was found that textbooks are more likely to promote our local culture (source culture) in learning English and product as an elements and focus on speech act as the language content that students are most focused on learning.
