An Analysis of Code-Switching Used by English Department Students at University of Riau
This study investigated types and functions of code-switching, employed by the EFL learners at one of the Universities in Riau Province, Indonesia while having an interaction with each other in informal or formal settings. This was a descriptive study that used a qualitative approach. The conversation occurred naturally through phone calls and interviews were used to collect the data. The natural interactions through phone calls were audiotaped, transcribed, analyzed and classified.. The study aimed to find out the kinds and reasons of code-switching used within the English based conversation. The findings showed that learners frequently used Inter-sentential code-switching rather than Intra-sentential code-switching. Code-switching was used to clarify speech content, to talk about particular topics, for lexical needs, to use repetition to clarify something, to show emphatic and to provide emphasis about something. However, the EFL learners of the English Department not only used an English-Indonesian switch but also an Indonesian-English switch in the English based conversation. In this study, they appear to use code-switching while having an English based interaction.
