Aplikasi Metode Urea Inclusion Compounds (Uic) Pada Fraksinasi Biodiesel
ABSTRACT
Substance of polyunsaturated fatty acid (PUFA) in commercial biodiesel tend to
instability. Then fractionation toward PUFA by using urea inclusion compounds
(UIC) method in order to upgrade the quality of biodiesel. The aims of this
research were identifying influence of complexation temperature and time on the
fractionation efficiency of saturated and mono unsaturated fatty acid (SFA and
MUFA) concentration, oxidation stability, and to get a product of biodiesel with
high level performance who has iodine indicator < 30–40 g I2/100 g.
Complexation process was carried out by mixing biodiesel to urea-methanol
solution with ratio 1:2:6 (w/w/v) respectively, then followed by crystallization
process with temperature and time were 15, 20, and 25°C at 2, 4, and 6 hours.
During process, urea and fatty acid with linear alkyl about to make solid phase,
called urea complexed fraction (UCF), and residual fatty acid then concentrate
on filtrate to be non-urea complexed fraction (NUCF). Product for each phase
then analysis using Wijs method, GC-MS and FTIR. Under optimum conditions,
iodine number at UCF phase was 44,01 which obtained at variable process 20°C
and 4 hours, comparable with oxidation stability reached about 18,61 hours.
Through the calculation of the mass balance from GC-MS analysis results, the
efficiency of the fractionation process for the UCF phase was 45,66%. The same
results were verified from absorption peak at 3009±1 cm-1 which is cumulative of
unsaturated fatty acid (UFA) substance detected with high intensity in the NUCF
spectrum. Hence, the longer time and temperature of complexation increased
significantly on the fractionation of FAME.
