Uji Kualitas Pulp Dari Kotoran Gajah Dengan Larutan Pemasak Asam Formiat
ABSTRACT
The increasing rate of population growth causes the need and demand for pulp and
paper to also increase. The increasing demand for pulp and paper needs is not
proportional to the availability of existing wood raw materials. Elephant dung is
one of the animal wastes which is quite a lot and is not used properly. Elephant
dung is thought to contain high fiber and has the potential to be used as raw material
for pulp with the help of a formic acid cooking solution. Therefore, this study was
carried out with the aim of knowing the quality of the pulp of elephant dung cooked
with formic acid solvents with various concentrations and knowing what
concentration of formic acid is the best in the process of making elephant dung pulp.
This study used a non-factorial completely randomized design (CRD) consisting of
3 treatments and 3 replications. Before pulping is done, elephant dung is washed,
dried and cut into pieces first, then the pulping process is carried out using the
organosolv method and further testing is carried out on the quality of the pulp
produced. The results of quality testing showed that the yield test (yield) obtained
a value of 47,15-63,00%, for testing the lignin content the value was 10,58-13,82%
and for testing the alpha cellulose content the value was 86,31-87,65 %.
