Prarancangan Pabrik Metil Salisilat Dari Asam Salisilat Dan Metanol Dengan Desain Alat Utama Reaktor Esterifikasi
ABSTRACT
Methyl salicylate is one of the most needed ingredients in Indonesia, especially as a raw material for the synthesis of pharmaceutical ingredients with various applications such as pain relief, as well as aromatherapy in the food or cosmetic industry. In meeting the domestic demand for methyl salicylate, Indonesia is still importing from other countries. The design of a methyl salicylate plant from salicylic acid and methanol aims to further study the feasibility of establishing a methyl salicylate plant in Indonesia. The methyl salicylate plant from salicylic acid and methanol is designed with a capacity of 20,000 tons/year and operates continuously for 330 days/year and 24 hours/day. The raw materials used are methanol with a content of 99.85% (w/w) as much as 38831,293 tons/year and salicylic acid as much as 20923,531 tons/year. In general, the stages of the process of making methyl salicylate are as follows: (i) the reaction between salicylic acid and methanol using a sulfuric acid catalyst, (ii) neutralization of the unreacted sulfuric acid and salicylic acid catalyst using dilute NaOH solution, (iii) separation of the resulting salt. neutralization, (iv) purification of methyl salicylate product through evaporation process, and (v) recovery of methanol by distillation process. The esterification reactor is the main process equipment used in the methyl salicylate plant, in this design, three continuous stirred tank reactors with a capacity of 2500 gal are selected which are arranged in series and designed with a heating jacket to maintain the reaction at a temperature of 68°C. The methyl salicyate plant will be built in the city of Bontang, East Kalimantan with 218 employees. Bontang City was chosen as the location for the factory because of its location close to the raw materials in the East Kalimantan Methanol Industry. In addition, the city of Bontang is also close to the sea, making it easier to procure salicylic acid raw materials from China and facilitate the marketing of methyl salicylate products which are widely used in the pharmaceutical industry in Java. The factory requires fixed capital of Rp. 488.117.092.201 and working capital of Rp. 86.138.310.388. This methyl salicylate plant is classified as low risk with an ROI of 27,381%, PBB 2,68 years, IRR 22,7356%, and BEP 58%. Based on the economic evaluation, this plant is considered attractive and worth to be further studied.
