ABSTRACT
The development of industry has a positive effect in the form of increasing the national economy, but has a negative effect, namely heavy metal waste pollution. Copper ion (Cu2+) is one of the causes of polluted environment. The maximum limit of copper ions (Cu2+) allowed in environmental water according to the PERMENKES RI NO.492/MENKES/PER/IV/2010 is 1.0 mg/l. Pineapple leaf fiber has a high enough cellulose content so that it can be used as a new alternative as an adsorbent. This study studied the effect of contact time and particle size of pineapple leaf fiber on the adsorption of copper ions (Cu2+) on the adsorption capacity of pineapple leaf fiber adsorbents and to determine the effectiveness of pineapple leaf fiber adsorbent in absorbing copper (Cu2+) ions. This research method begins with the preparation of pineapple leaf samples, then the activation process with 9% NaOH for 70 minutes. The adsorption process used pineapple leaf fiber as an adsorbent with a mass of 1 gr and variations in particle size of pineapple leaf fiber -40/+60; -60/+80 and -80/+100 mesh and a contact time of 30; 60; 90 and 120 minutes with a stirring speed of 90 rpm and a concentration of copper ion adsorbate (Cu2+) 10 ppm to measure the copper ion (Cu2+) remaining in the solution after the adsorption process. The activated pineapple leaf fiber adsorbent contains a water content of 14.3%; 12.4% and 11.2% for pineapple leaf fiber size -40/+60, respectively; -60/+80 and -80/+100 mesh. The highest adsorption effectiveness was found at a contact time of 90 minutes with a particle size of pineapple leaf fiber -80/+100 mesh which was 94.93% and the adsorption value was 0.94 mg/gr.
