ABSTRACT
Dimethyl formamide is an organic compound with the chemical formula (CH3)2HCON, which in general can be abbreviated as DMF. This compound is a colorless liquid that is miscible with water and most organic liquids. Dimethyl has the main function as a solvent with a low evaporation rate. Usually this solvent is used in the production process of acrylic fibers and plastics. Dmf can also be used as a solvent in the peptide coupling process for pharmaceuticals, in the production of peptides, and in the production of adhesives, synthetic leather, film coatings, and others. Carbon monoxide and dimethyl amine are used as raw materials for the production of dimethyl formamide through the Davy Technology process. In this process, a sodium methoxide catalyst dissolved in methanol is used. The stages of dimethyl formamide process include the raw material preparation, the reaction, the salt separation, and the dimethyl formamide separation process. Dimethyl amine from the mixer (M-101) and carbon monoxide from the gas tank (ST-101) are fed into the reactor (R-101). Then, it enters the separation stage which used to separate the carbonate and formate salts using the settling tank. The salt will precipitate and separate from the dimethyl formamide, and then dimethyl formamide will be forwarded to the evaporator. And then, dimethyl formamide is purified using distillation to produce dimethyl formamide with purity of 99%. The main device design is the reactor, which has a function to react dimethyl amine and carbon monoxide with the help of sodium methoxide catalyst, so that dimethyl formamide can be formed. The type of this reactor is a bubble column reactor. This reactor operates at 120 oC with a pressure of 5 bar. The results of the factory economic evaluation shows that PBB value is 1,37 years, the IRR value is 22,75%, the ROI value is 57,5%, and the BEP value is 26%.
