Pengaruh Ukuran Adsorben Arang Aktif Kulit Pisang Kepok (Musa Paradisiaca L.) Terhadap Efektivitas Penjerapan Ion Fe2+
ABSTRACT
Iron metal (Fe) is one of the heavy metals polluting waters originating from industrial waste. Fe metal contamination can be overcome by adsorption method using activated charcoal as adsorbent. The activated charcoal used is made from kepok banana peels, because kepok banana peels contain lignin, cellulose, and hemicellulose as carbon forming so that kepok banana peels can be used as activated charcoal adsorbents. The purpose of this research was to study the characteristics of the activated charcoal of the kepok banana peel based on SNI 06-3730-1995, and to study the effect of the particle size of the activated charcoal and the contact time on the adsorption power and the effectiveness of Fe2+ metal ion adsorption using the activated charcoal of the kepok banana peel. Preparation of kepok banana peel activated charcoal was carried out through the preparation of kepok banana peel, carbonization, refining and sifting of charcoal, and activation using 3M HCl. The characteristics of the kepok banana peel activated charcoal tested were testing for ash content, moisture content, and iodine adsorption capacity. Fe2+ ion adsorption was carried out by contacting the Fe2+ ion solution with activated charcoal adsorbents of -40/+60, -60/+80 and -80/+100 mesh and contact times of 10, 30, 50 and 70 minutes. The best size of activated charcoal was obtained at -80/+100 mesh size which obtained 4% ash content, 3.9% moisture content, 850 mg/g iodine adsorption capacity. The best conditions for adsorption occurred in -80/+100 mesh activated charcoal with a time of 50 minutes obtained Fe2+ ion adsorption capacity of 0.14 mg/g and the effectiveness of Fe2+ ion adsorption was 90.16%. This is because the smaller the particle size, the larger the contact surface area and the longer the contact time allows more adsorbate to be bound so that the adsorption power and effectiveness of adsorption will be greater.
