ABSTRACT
Butanol is one of the chemicals whose needs continue to increase for industry. Butanol with the chemical formula C4H10O is required for industrial needs as a solvent or organic synthesis. Butanol is an intermediate material used as raw material for downstream industries in the textile, polymer, plastic, paint, surface coating and pharmaceutical industries. The level of butanol consumption in the country is very large, but it is not accompanied by the availability of industrial factories that produce butanol. Indonesia itself to meet the needs of butanol still relies on imports from China and the United States. Butanol can be produced by the hydrogenation process from butyl butyrate and hydrogen using a Cu catalyst in the reaction. The stages of the butanol formation process are divided into 3 stages, namely the raw material preparation stage, the product formation stage, and the product purification stage. Butyl butyrate from the vaporizer (E-102) and hydrogen from the storage gas tank (TK-102) are fed into the reactor (R-101). The reaction occurs in the gas phase at a temperature of 300⁰C and a pressure of 10 atm. The reaction that occurs is exothermic with a solid catalyst, therefore a multi-tube fixed bed reactor is used. Next, it enters the hydrogen separation stage with a separator (SP-302) which aims to separate hydrogen from butanol. The separated hydrogen will be recycled back to the reactor (R-201). Next head to the distillation tower (T-301). The product from the distillation tower is n-butanol with a purity of 99%. The bottom product of the distillation tower contains n-butyl butyrate, n-butanol and water. The main design tool in this design is the vaporizer (E-102), which functions to convert the butyl butyrate phase into gas. The type of vaporizer used is a long tube vertical vaporizer. This vaporizer operates at 300⁰C with a pressure of 14.70 psi. The results of the factory economic evaluation showed a PBP value of 2.57 years, an IRR of 22.88%, an ROI of 28.77%, and a BEP of 58.56%.
