Prarancangan Pabrik Metil Salisilat Dari Asam Salisilat Dan Metanol Dengan Desain Alat Utama Menara Distilasi
ABSTRACT
Methyl salicylate (C8H8O3) or oil of wintergreen is an organic compound in the ester group in the form of a colorless liquid which has little solubility in water. Methyl salicylate has uses in various industries. In the pharmaceutical industry, methyl salicylate is used as an active ingredient in drug formulations to take advantage of its analgesic effect and as a warming ointment or liniment. The food and beverage industry utilizes methyl salicylate as a flavor enhancing agent because it has a distinctive taste and aroma. The cosmetic industry uses methyl salicylate as a fragrance which is formulated in essential oils and perfumes. Methyl salicylate is produced commercially by reacting salicylic acid with methanol using an esterification process. The reactor used in the esterification of methyl salicylate is a stirred tank flow reactor (RATB) which operates isothermally at a temperature of 68°C and a pressure of 1.5 atm. While the product purification stage which aims to separate methyl salicylate from unreacted reactants with a purity level of 99.5% is by using a distillation tower. The type of distillation tower used is the sieve tray tower. The operating conditions of the distillation tower are 65.2 oC at the top and 160 oC at the bottom with a pressure of 1.24 bar each. Factory economic analysis is carried out to determine the feasibility of the factory to be built. Based on the results of the economic feasibility analysis of the plant, the methyl salicylate plant is feasible to build with a PBP of 2.68 years, an IRR of 22.7359%, an ROI of 27.381% and a BEP of 59%.
