An Analysis Of Discourse Markers In Writing Thesis Abstracts By The Students Of English Study Program Universitas Riau
This research investigated discourse markers used in writing theses abstract made by the students of English Study Program Universitas Riau who graduated in 2021. This study was aimed at finding out: a) discourse markers used in theses abstract b) the most dominant types of discourse markers used in theses abstract. This research was a descriptive study. The subjects in this research were 29 theses abstracts taken from Jurnal Online Mahasiswa Universitas Riau which can be accessed at the link: https://jom.unri.ac.id/. In data analysis, this study used Fraser’s theory (1999) that emphasized on three types, namely contrastive marker, elaborative marker, and inferential marker. The result of this research shows that there were three types of Discourse Markers. They are: contrastive markers, elaborative markers, and inferential markers. The most dominant marker used by the students was inferential markers with the frequency 31, then followed by elaborative markers with the frequency 16, and the last is contrastive markers which only appears 3 times.
