ABSTRACT
The development of the tofu industry in Indonesia is very rapid along with the increasing consumption needs of the community, this can cause environmental problems due to the waste water produced. The high organic compounds contained in tofu liquid waste is evidence that COD concentrations are increasing and if discharged into waters without prior treatment it causes pollution. The solution that can be applied is to utilize processing technology based on microalgae Chlorella sp. which can not only purify wastewater and overcome environmental pollution problems but also use organic compounds in wastewater as growth nutrients and produce lipids to be converted into an alternative energy of biodiesel. In this research, the processing of tofu liquid waste by microalgae Chlorella sp. using Rotary Algae Biofilm Reactor (RABR) technology with a semi continuous nutrient addition method through varying periods of changing wastewater every 3 days, every 4 days and every 6 days for a total of 12 days of processing, this aims to determine the growth rate of suspended cells and biofilm, as well as the lipid production of microalgae Chlorella sp. and removal of COD from tofu liquid waste. The best results were obtained during the variation of the waste water change period every 4 days because the nutrients needed by the microalgae were met properly, besides that the highest total density of suspended cells and biofilm was obtained, namely 9,3x106 cells/ml, and lipid levels during processing were 25-52% and the COD removal efficiency of tofu liquid waste reached 90,24% with a final COD concentration of 64 mg/L.
