This research is motivated by problems in the learning process at SMP Taruna Sakti Pekanbaru, especially class VIII in the Civics subject, teachers still use old teaching methods such as lecture methods, because the teachers who teach are not from their fields, where these teachers more often use lecture methods and take notes. This is done every time the meeting where students feel less interested in the learning process. Therefore, the researcher is interested in conducting research in order to find out the Influence of Discovery Learning Model on Critical Thinking in Civics Learning of Class VIII Students of SMP Taruna Sakti Pekanbaru.
The purpose of this study is to examine how much influence the Discovery Learning model has on students' critical thinking skills in Civics subjects of class VIII of SMP Taruna Sakti Pekanbaru. The benefits of this study are expected to be used to increase insight and references that can help in developing research results and can be one of the references for further research.
This research method is quantitative experimental type using descriptive analysis of the research sample, data collection instruments used in this study are questionnaires, observation sheets and documentation. The sampling technique used is random sampling in collecting the population and samples, and homogeneity is tested to obtain two homogeneous classes. The population in this study amounted to 83 students. The sample in this study amounted to 57 students divided into 2 classes, namely the control class (VIII C) and the experimental class (VIII B). The analysis used in this study is the t-test using the SPSS version 25 program. Based on the independent t-test using SPSS version 25, it was obtained tcount = 3.012 and ttable = 2.004, which means tcount> ttable, so Ha is accepted and H0 is rejected. So it can be concluded that there is an effect after the Discovery Learning model is carried out on students' critical thinking in the PKN subject at SMP Taruna Sakti Pekanbaru. Based on the results of the N-gain score test calculation, it shows that the average N-gain score for the experimental class (Discovery Learning Model) is 79%, included in the effective category, while the average N-gain for the control class is 1.19%, included in the less effective category. Therefore, it is concluded that the use of the Discovery Learning model is effective in improving the critical thinking skills of class VIII students of SMP Taruna Sakti Pekanbaru.
