Product trials were conducted through one-on-one tests involving 56 students, consisting of 29 students in the experimental class and 27 students in the control class. Product assessment by users involved two teachers and 59 students from SMA Negeri 2 Tembilahan. The research design for field trials used a pre-experimental method with a static group pretest-posttest design. The research sample was selected using a purposive sampling technique, so that two sample groups were obtained, namely the experimental group and the control group.
The results of the study showed that the developed teaching material products had a very good level of validity with the following average percentages: language and material experts 92.5%, media experts 93.5%, and local wisdom experts 93.5%. The results of the assessment by users, namely teachers and students, also showed very good criteria, with the percentage of assessments of 85.68% from teachers and 92.60% from students, respectively. One-on-one testing was conducted to identify product deficiencies based on input from teachers and students.
In the field trial, the pretest-posttest analysis of the short story writing skills of grade XI students showed significant results. The normality test using the Kolmogorov-Smirnov method produced a significance value of 0.091 in the experimental class and 0.200 in the control class. This value indicates that the pretest data in both classes are normally distributed, because the significance value is greater than 0.05. Furthermore, the results of the independent sample t-test showed a significant difference between the pretest and posttest results. In the control class, the significance value (Sig. 2-Tailed) of 0.042 showed a significant increase after treatment. Meanwhile, in the comparison between the experimental class and the control class, a significance value of 0.002 was obtained, which is smaller than 0.05. These results indicate that the use of teaching materials applied in the experimental class has a significant effect on improving students' short story writing skills compared to the control class that did not use the teaching materials.
Based on the results of this study, it can be concluded that the product of teaching materials for writing short stories containing local wisdom for class XI students of SMA Negeri 2 Tembilahan has been successfully developed.
