ABSTRACT
Polyvinyl Alcohol (PVOH) is one of the compounds classified in the group of acetylene derivative compounds. Polyvinyl Alcohol is made from polyvinyl acetate and methanol raw materials. The factory is planned to be built in Dumai City, Riau, Indonesia. Dumai City was chosen to facilitate access to raw material fulfillment. The PVOH factory was built with a capacity of 50,000 tons/year. PVOH is useful as a coating in paper making, so PVOH is focused on fulfilling paper coating raw materials, considering that Indonesia is one of the countries producing pulp and paper in the world.
The process used to produce Polyvinyl Alcohol is by the Transesterification reaction between polyvinyl acetate and methanol using a Sodium Hydroxide catalyst. The reaction takes place at operating conditions of 57°C and 1 atm pressure by producing the main product Polyvinyl Alcohol. The electricity needs of the factory are met by a Steam Power Plant. Water needs are obtained from the river near the factory, namely the Mampu River. Liquid waste from process waste, maintenance waste and domestic waste is processed through chemical processing. The factory is designed by implementing a heat exchanger network (HEN). The equipment in the factory is equipped with safety instruments and process control instruments to ensure process performance, ensure stability and suppress external disturbances.
The Polyvinyl Alcohol factory has a working time of 350 days per year and 24 hours per day. The factory operates for 47 weeks per year and 3 weeks per year are used for shut down, maintenance, and repairs. The form of the company is a Limited Liability Company (PT) with 198 employees. Based on the results of the economic analysis, the Polyvinyl Alcohol factory is feasible to be built with a Discounted Payback Period of 4 years, Internal Rate of Return of 22.867%, Break Event Point of 42.17%, and Net Present Value of Rp. 11,229,725,318,560.
