ABSTRACT
Paraxylene is an aromatic hydrocarbon compound with molecular formula C8H10. Paraxylene
is used as a raw material for several end products such as pure terephthalic acid (PTA) or
dimethyl terephthalate (DMT). Terephthalic acid (PTA) and dimethyl terephthalate (DMT)
can be processed as materials for the plastic and textile industries. In addition, paraxylene is
used as a resin material, synthetic fiber, plasticizer, gasoline mixture, leather industry as well as
cleaning agents and thinners for paints and varnishes, and so on. However, the need for
paraxylene in Indonesia can be met by importing paraxylene from other countries. Therefore,
the establishment of a paraxylene plant will reduce the need for imports and increase state
revenues. The paraxylene plant was established in Sandangharjo Area, Brondong District,
Lamongan Regency, East Java Province in 2028 with a capacity of 190,000 tons/year.
Paraxylene production is carried out by the toluene disproportionation process using
MPTX catalyst assistance as an application of PxMax technology which produces mixed
products in the form of paraxylene, metaxylene, and orthoxylene and by-products in the form
of benzene. The reaction takes place in a multitube fixed bed reactor at operating conditions of
400 oC and 34 bar pressure with toluene conversion in the reaction of 31%. Paraxylene is
purified using a distillation column to produce paraxylene products with a purity of 99.9%.
The utility needs of the paraxylene plant are provided in the form of steam supply units, water
supply units, and electricity supply units. The equipment in the plant is equipped with safety
instruments and process control instruments to ensure the production process runs well.
The paraxylene plant has a fixed capital investment of Rp 3.598.462.409.570, a
working capital investment of Rp 635.022.778.159, and a total production cost of
Rp. 3.410.926.528.784. The products produced are sold with a revenue of IDR
8.389.173.320.352 per year. From the profitability analysis, a net present value (NPV) of
Rp 7.433.438.914.815 was obtained with a discount rate of 24%, an internal rate of return
(IRR) of 25,172%, a break-even point (BEP) at 25% production capacity, and a payback
period (PBP) of 2,64 years. Based on these results, the design of paraxylene plant from toluene
of PxMax technology is considered feasible and a profitable investment.
