Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene (ABS) Copolymer is a thermoplastic polymer material made by grafting technique between polybutadiene, latex, acrylonititrile, and styrene. ABS Copolymer is widely used as a frame for kitchenware, electronics, automotive, and toys. Currently, the need for ABS Copolymer in Indonesia is still mostly imported from other countries such as Malaysia, Taiwan and South Korea. Therefore, the establishment of an ABS Copolymer factory will reduce the need for imports and increase state revenue. The ABS Copolymer plant is planned to be established in Pulo Merak District, Cilegon City, Banten Province in 2028 with a capacity of 35,000 tons/year.
The production of ABS Copolymer is carried out by an emulsion process using the grafting method as an application of Toyo Enginnering/Mitsui Chemical technology which produces ABS Copolymer products in the form of pallets. The reaction takes place in the Continuous Stirred Tank Reactor at operating conditions of 73oC and 76oC and pressure 1 Atm with ABS Copolymer conversion of 99.5%. ABS Copolymer is purified by using a Centrifuge, Rotary Drum Vacuum Filter (RDVF), and Dryer to produce ABS Copolymer products with 99.9% purity. The provision of utility needs for the ABS Copolymer factory is in the form of steam supply units, coolers, water supply units, and electricity supply units. The equipment in the factory is equipped with safety instruments and process control instruments to ensure that the production process runs well
The ABS Copolymer factory has a fixed capital investment of IDR 681,398,512,802, a working capital investment of IDR 120,246,769,377 and a total production cost of IDR 884,018,237,845. The products produced are sold with an income of IDR 1,343,532,536,084 per year. The analysis of the profitability showed a net present value (NPV) of IDR 717,347,725,126 with a discount in the form of an internal rate of return (IRR) of 11.5959%, break-even point (BEP) at a production capacity of 45.1%, and a time of return on capital (PBP) of 2.52 years. Based on these results, the design of the Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene (ABS) Copolymer plant with Toyo Engineering/Mitsui Chemical Technology is considered feasible to establish and is a profitable investment.
