Dragon traps fishing gear is a new fishing gear used in Indonesia and research on dragon trawl fishing gear is still small. In addition, there are not many areas that operate dragon traps. This study aims to examine the construction and design of dragon traps used by fishermen in Insit Village, Tebing Tinggi Barat Subdistrict, Meranti Islands Regency, Riau. Dragon traps is an environmentally friendly passive fishing gear that began to be used since 2022 with the main target of shrimp and by-products such as fish and crabs. The research was conducted from August 26 to September 9, 2024 using survey and field observation methods, including direct measurement of the gear, fisher interviews, and visual documentation. The results showed that the dragon traps were 15 m long and consisted of 36 galvanized iron frames, a polyethylene (PE) net body with a mesh size of 0.5 inches, and 32 entrances arranged alternately. It is also equipped with two catch bags, PE straps, and 5 m stakes. The fishing location is in shallow, muddy waters with a depth of 2-3 m and a distance of ±150 m from the shore. The catch was dominated by Penaeus merguensis with 120 kg out of a total of 149 kg, indicating that dragon traps are effective as the main shrimp fishing gear in shallow coastal waters.
