ABSTRACT
This research was conducted in August 2019 in Ranah Village, Kampar Sub District, Kampar Regency, Riau Province. The purpose of the study are to analyze the level of independence and analyze the relationship of characteristics with the independence of cultivators. The method used is a survey method using a questionnaire. Determination of respondents using the census method with 54 people. The results showed that Jelawat fish cultivators in Ranah Village were as follows: The level of independence is mostly in the high category it means that the level of independence in terms of capital is already independent with existing indicators, cultivators use large amounts of their own capital, utilization of additional productive capital but the final result is not satisfactory, while independence based on each respondent is in the sufficient category meaning that only two indicators out of the four indicators are already independent. The relationship of independence with the characteristics of Jelawat fish cultivators in Ranah Village: The relationship between age and independence is in the category are not strong not direct and shows an unreal relationship, the relationship of education with the independence are strong unidirectional categories and shows a real relationship, the income category are less strong and unidirectional and shows a real relationship, the business experience of the less powerful and unidirectional categories shows a real relationship.
