ABSTRACT
Biodiesel is an alternative fuel that is environmentally friendly. The catalyst
commonly used in making biodiesel is a homogeneous base catalyst that is
difficult to separate from product. Therefore, it is necessary to develop catalyst
technology that is more economical, easy to implement, and environmentally
friendly, such as sulfonated carbon nanospheres@ferromagnetic catalyst. This
catalyst was synthesized by reacting granulated sugar, FeCl2, FeCl3, and the
addition of ammonia through a hydrothermal carbonization process for further
sulfonated using 98% concentrated sulfuric acid. The catalyst produced has a
nanospherical shape with a size of 0.08-0.16 μm. The catalyst is then used in the
transesterification reaction with variations in process conditions to assess its
effect on biodiesel yield. Dependent variables are weight of Low Grade Crude
Palm Oil (LGCPO) 50 grams, stirring speed of 400 rpm, reaction time of 120
minutes, and temperature of 60 oC, while independent variable are catalyst
concentration of 0.5%, 1%, 1.5%, 2% (w/w) and molar ratio methanol:oil 1:3,
1:6, 1:9, 1:12. Biodiesel yield increased with the increasing of catalyst
concentration and oil:methanol molar ratio, until it reached optimum condition
with a yield of 96.12% at 1.5% (w/w) catalyst concentration, oil:methanol molar
ratio 1:9. The biodiesel produced has met the Indonesian biodiesel quality
standard (SNI 7182: 2015) with the density of 878.67 kg/m3, kinematic viscosity of
3.28 mm2/s, acid number of 0.29 mg-KOH/g biodiesel, and flash point of 127 °C.
