Briquette is an alternative energy source that comes from agricultural biomass
waste such as oil palm empty fruit bunches. Utilization of spent bleaching earth as
an additional material in the manufacture of briquettes which is one of the efforts
to utilize solid waste resulting from bleaching of crude palm oil that has not been
used optimally. This study aims to determine the effect of differences in the
composition of raw materials and the addition of tapioca adhesives on the quality
of briquettes produced using the carbonization process. The process of making
briquettes in this study with variations in the composition of raw materials for palm
empty fruit bunches: spent bleaching earth 100: 0, 90:20, 80:20, 70:30, 60:40 (%)
and tapioca adhesive concentration of 4, 6, 8 (%) of the total weight of 10 gram
briquettes. Fixed variations used were carbonization temperature of oil palm empty
fruit bunches of 450oC for 90 minutes, spent bleaching earth 470oC for 30 minutes,
particle size of 100 mesh and pressing pressure of 120 bar. Drying is done indoors
for 24 hours then roasted for 1 hour at 105oC. The results showed that the best
briquettes were obtained in the composition of the composition of the empty palm
fruit bunches and spent bleaching earth 60%: 40% with the addition of 4% tapioca
adhesive (0.4 gr) where the water content was 2.5% ash content 5.5%, content
volatile matter 8.0%, fixed carbon content 84.0% and heat value of 5492.93 cal /
gr. While the best compressive strength value of 14.76 kg / cm2 and the best density
of 0.79 gr / cm3 were obtained at a composition of 60%: 40% with the addition of
8% tapioca adhesive (0.8 gr). The briquette flame test is carried out under an
optimum condition of 60%: 40% with the addition of 4% adhesive (0.4 gr) resulting
in an ignition duration of 75 minutes 12 seconds.
