Distribusi Gajah Sumatera (Elephas Maximus Sumatranus Temmink.) Di Seksi Pengelolaan Wilayah I Desa Lubuk Kembang Bunga Dan Sekitarnya
ABSTRACT
Tesso Nilo National Park (TNNP) is a type of lowland forest found on
the island of Sumatra. The national park is in poor condition now, because there
has been a lot of damage due to land conversion. As a result of the damage, it also
disrupted the distribution of Sumatran elephants in the national park. The purpose
of this study was to identify the distribution of Sumatran elephants in The
Regional Management Section I Lubuk Kembang Bunga Village And
Surroundings by looking at the signs that were left behind and their relationship to
habitat conditions in the area. This research was conducted from December 2017
to December 2019. The distribution of Sumatran elephants can be determined
using direct and indirect survey methods. Observations were made by creating a 2
x 2 km grid of several grids so that each grid would represent a 4 km² or 400
hectare block in the field. The Sumatran elephant distribution survey was
conducted using a non-probabilistic or purposive survey approach. The data on
the distribution of elephants that were collected were analyzed descriptively
qualitatively according to the survey objectives. The distribution of Sumatran
elephants is influenced by habitat factors such as forest canopy cover, vegetation
type, hydro, and topography. Forests that have a tight canopy cover are very
popular with elephants as a place to rest from the hot sun because elephants are
warm-blooded animals. So, elephant took cover under the canopy to lower the
temperature. For the type of vegetation favored by elephants, is there vegetation
that can provide good food in the form of tree trunks, several types of grass, and
oil palm saplings. Furthermore, based on the relationship between the distribution
of elephants and hydrology. Elephants are mammals that are very dependent on
water, which they use for drinking or bathing after eating or wallowing. The last
one is the relationship between elephant distribution and topography. As large
mammals, elephants prefer a flat or sloping topography. This is because elephants
will find it easier to walk in this topographic type.
