skin health. In addition, research conducted by Dr. Dara Ayuningtyas who is the Head
Medical and Training of ZAP Clinic resulted in the fact that Indonesian women think being
beautiful means having bright and radiant skin. But in fact Indonesian women have various
skin problems including acne problems which are mostly experienced by teenagers. There
is research conducted by Himalaya, a brand of health and personal care products which
reveals that 77 percent of 1,000 acne sufferers in Indonesia have experienced insult to their
condition or what is called acne shaming which can have an effect on one's self-concept.
This study used a qualitative method with a phenomenological approach and
descriptive analysis presentation. There were 5 informants in this study who were obtained
using the snowball technique. Data collection techniques using interviews, observation,
and documentation. The data analysis technique used a 4-stage interactive analysis model
starting from data collection, data reduction, data organizing, and drawing conclusions.
And the data validity checking technique uses triangulation and participation extension.
The research objective was to find out how the self-concept of young women suffering from
moderate and severe gradations of acne in Pekanbaru City in terms of communication
experience, psychological, social and physical aspects of their self-concept.
The results showed that 2 informants had a positive self-concept and 3 informants
had a negative self-concept in terms of their psychological, social, and physical aspects.
Teenage girls with moderate and severe gradations of acne in Pekanbaru City have
experienced negative verbal communication by getting comments and questions about
acne, getting ridicule and nicknames and getting physical comparisons. In positive verbal
communication experiences, they get support and product suggestions from friends and
relatives. Meanwhile, nonverbally they get unpleasant stares from other people. Then in
the psychological aspect of negative self-concept is shown by feeling sad, uncomfortable,
lack of confidence, embarrassment, hobbies that are blocked due to acne. Meanwhile, a
positive self-concept is indicated by feeling comfortable, being diligent in taking care of
oneself and generating a sense of empathy. In the social aspect, positive self-concept is
shown by opening oneself from the opposite sex, while negative self-concept is shown by
closing oneself from the opposite sex and limiting the environment of friendship and
communication. In the physical aspect, positive self-concept is indicated by a beautiful
assessment of the appearance as it is, and satisfied with the appearance that is owned.
Meanwhile, a negative self-concept is indicated by a poor or not beautiful evaluation of
physical judgments, dissatisfaction with appearance, and covering up acne using a mask
or make up.
