ABSTRACT
Elephants have a preference for several types of plants, to find out it is necessary to observe and analyze the types of ground cover plant or seedling that are preferred by the sumatran elephant. The aims of this study are: to identify the type of elephant feed at the Pusat Latihan Gajah (PLG) Minas sub District, Siak Regency, Riau Province and to identify the level of preference for elephant feed at the Pusat Latihan Gajah (PLG) Minas sub District, Siak Regency, Riau Province. The research is conducted at the Pusat Latihan Gajah (PLG) Minas sub District, Siak Regency, Riau Province. This research is conducted in March 2021. The materials used are several vegetations that have the potential to be food for sumatran elephants. The tools used in this study are a meter, Suunto compass, Global Positioning System (GPS) Garmin Etrex 10, camera, machete, raffia rope, plastic bag, scale, calculator, guide book of elephant feed identification, tally sheet, and stationery. Research data based on the source consists of two types, namely, primary data and secondary data: 1. Primary data in the form of data which is taken through direct observation in the field, the data needed are: aspects of feed and various types of plants which are found at the Pusat Latihan Gajah (PLG), 2. Secondary data is a literature study that discusses the sumatran elephant and various types of food for the Sumatran elephant. From the research results, the following conclusions can be taken: 1. The types of elephant feed that are often found in the Pusat Latihan Gajah (PLG) of Minas Regency constitude ilalang, teki ladang, jarum grass, segitiga grass and paitan grass. 2. The level of preference for elephant food, so that the most preferred types of food for sumatran elephants are teki ladang (Cyperus sp.), paitan grass (Axonopus compressus), ilalang (Imperata cylindrica raeusch), jariji grass (Digitaria sanguinalis), segitiga grass (Cyperus rotundus), and putri malu (Mimosa pudica), the types of food favored by sumatran elephants are jarum grass (Chrysopogon aciculata), bambuan grass (Lophatherum gracile), and kentangan (Borreria latifolia), while the type of food which sumatran elephants don't like are pakis kelabang (Nephrolepis biserrata), senduduk (Melastoma candidum) and laban (Vitex pinnata).
