Konvergensi Media Massa Riau Pos Dalam Persaingan Media Siber
Convergence is an absolute step that must be taken by Riau Pos to
maintain its existence in the midst of intense media competition. The emergence of
new media has forced a change in the conventional media order, and newspapers
are no exception. The flow of globalization and the rise of the internet makes the
mass media have to come to terms with these changes and go hand in hand to
survive. The global pandemic is exacerbating the storm that is hitting the media
industry today. The limitation of all community activities ultimately disrupts the
economy and income in all fields of business. This condition becomes homework
that must be addressed immediately so as not to make bankruptcy as the path that
must be chosen.
This study uses a qualitative method with Continuum Convergence theory
belonging to Daily, Demo, Spillman and the concept of Management. The subjects
in this study were the Editor and Deputy Editor as well as the person in charge of
Riau Pos advertising. Data collection techniques used are observation, in-depth
interviews and documentation. The location of the research was carried out at the
Riau Pos Mass Media which is located in the Graha Pena Riau Building.
The results of the study found that Riau Pos carried out all stages of
Continuum Convergence. Cross Promotion, Clonning, Coopetition, and Content
Sharing are carried out by Riau Pos together with media that are both within the
Riau Pos Group (RPG). In addition, fellow media from RPGs also collaborate
with other media under the Jawa Pos Group (JPG). The basis of the
implementation of this convergence is collaboration that emphasizes the
characteristics of each platform. The collaboration between RPG and JPG is a
form of mutual support so that the media can compete and develop. The stages of
sharing the budget are carried out by Riau Pos management as an effort to get
income by involving advertisers and the world's largest search engine, Google.
Full convergence has finally been implemented, although not yet perfect, with the
implementation of 3M, namely Multichanne, Multimedia, and Multiplatform. The
implementation of this convergence is indeed a way out for Riau Pos to survive as
a print media in the form of newspapers and cyber media with its website,
RiauPos.co. All of these stages of convergence are referred to in the Continuum
Convergence Theory proposed by Dailey, Demo, and Spillman. As well as in
advertising management, Riau Pos has adapted tariffs since the existence of the
website and of course the pandemic that hit. Apart from that, relational
development strategies and seasonal promotions are also carried out.
