Interactions between different cultures often occur in everyday life. In
intercultural interactions, there is an understanding that emphasizes the role of
verbal and nonverbal communication in conversation, which is based on the belief
that people from different cultures will adapt to accommodate other cultures. To
follow it requires a strategy in communication accommodation, such as the
strategy of convergence and divergence and the label of excessive
accommodation. This study aims to determine the strategy of convergence,
divergence and labeling of excess accommodation to speakers by Papuan and
Malay students at the University of Riau.

The results of this study indicate that at the time of accommodation of
intercultural communication between Papuan students and Melayu students at the
University of Riau, there are 3 forms of strategies, the first is the convergence
strategy of verbal forms carried out by Papuan students by using Indonesian and
the language mastered by Papuan students and university students. Malay when
interacting and its nonverbal form is to use body movements and in terms of
clothing that is created to provide comfort when interacting. The divergence
strategy, for the verbal form, there is an attempt to use the language of the
interlocutor respectively, and the nonverbal form is that Papuan students and
Malay students carry out cultural rejection movements. The excessive
accommodation strategy is the overaccomodation label given by Malay students
to Papuan students starting when Papuan students communicate using the
traditional language of Malay students inappropriately, resulting in feelings that
make the Melayu students lose interest in communicating with them.
