ABSTRACT
Kasang Kulim Zoo is one of the ex-situ conservation institutions located in
Riau Province. Ex-situ conservation institutions has a role to maintain and
preserve the existence of the orangutan population. This research is aim to
determine the maintenance techniques (cage management, feed management, and
health management) of the bornean and sumatran orangutans and to evaluate the
response of the bornean and sumatran orangutans on visitor behavior. The method
was used in this research is the method of observation, interviews and literature
study. The data and information were collected are the maintenance techniques of
the bornean and sumatran orangutans, including cage management, feed
management, and health management. Data of orangutan response behavior was
obtained by giving treatment different color of clothes and visitors behavior
towards bornean and sumatran orangutans. Based on the research that has been
done, the techniques of rearing the Bornean orangutan and sumatran orangutan
were different. Maintenance techniques involve three aspects, there are cage
management, feed management, and health management. The color of clothes
treatment did not affect the responses of the bornean and sumatran orangutans.
The bornean orangutan and sumatran orangutan gave different responses towards
visitors according to the behavior of visitors. There are six categories of orangutan
behaviors, namely eating behavior, moving behavior, resting behavior, social
behavior, self-play behavior, and other behaviors.
