Pengalaman Komunikasi Dan Konsep Diri Mahasiswa Universitas Riau Korban Body Shaming Di Kota Pekanbaru

The phenomenon of body shaming is widely highlighted and widespread in
the mass media lately and has a direct or indirect influence on an individual's
mental health. Body shaming is the behavior of criticizing or commenting on the
physicality of others in a negative way. Body shaming can take many forms and
can occur in children, teenagers and even adults. Ordinary people still judge this
case of body shaming is common even they consider body shaming is a joke or a
joke.
This research aims to find out the communication experience and selfconcept
of Riau University students victims of body shaming in Pekanbaru City.
This research uses qualitative research methods by approaching
phenomenologically. The subjects in this study amounted to 6 people, consisting
of 4 Riau University students who were victims of body shaming determined using
snowball techniques, 1 significant other, and 1 person referral group. Data
collection techniques are done by means of in-depth interviews and
documentation. The data analysis technique was performed using Miles and
Huberman's interactive data analysis model. To achieve the validity of the data in
this study the authors used triangulation and extension of participation.
The results of this study show the communication experience of Riau
University students victims of body shaming in Pekanbaru City in the form of
pleasant (positive) communication such as; Get support and motivation.
Communication experiences are unpleasant (negative) that they feel in the form of
getting insults and taunts related to physical, compared, and get physical
violence. The self-image they have is negative as felt by the victim because body
shaming itself is still considered a joke or joke. So the self-image they get is like
quiet, minder and not confident. But in their family environment and close friends
they still get a positive image, because family and friends have known the victim
long enough. The self-esteem of body shaming victims at Riau University is quite
high because they feel happy, accept their lives, never think of being someone
else. To the factors that affect the self-concept of body shaming victims at Riau
University, namely family and closest friends, who form the character of a victim
of body shaming.
